Recently the era of wearable has arrived. A number of wearable devices have already appeared on the market from numerous companies. All the objects that we put on our body such as watch, glass, band, clothing and accessories have incorporated with high technology and became wearable devices with many functions. Although many wearable devices were recently released, none of them were hugely succeeded. The general opinion on this result is that the technology and design are not appropriately coordinated yet.Customers don’t simply buy the product just because it is packed with such advanced technology and function. Once the product that properly combined technology and design appears, the real era of wearable will begin.
Architecture is a product, which already combined technology and design in a proper way. When you split this word into pieces, you can see that art exists in this word along with tech. Architecture is a synthetic art, which was created by combining technology and art ever since mankind moved away from natural structure. After the Industrial Revolution the modernism era arrived and technical part of architecture became more important than artistic part in order to fulfill high demands for worker’s housing supply.Nevertheless architecture, which is one of the components that make up city, was keep growing as a composite arts that combined technology and art.
Architects not only build structures but also freely express their interpretation of the theme from various events such as Biennale, Design Festival and Public Art Project and vie with other artists.
Young architects such as Haewon Shin (lokalDesign), Chanjoong Kim (THE_System Lab), Youngchul Jang, Sookhee Chun (Wise Architecture) and Project Team MOON JI BANG are particularly active.Other architects like Jinho Park (EAST4) and Sungryong Jo (Josungryong Urban Planning) showed numerous projects in addition to architectural projects.
Space organization inside Anyang Pavilion that architect Haewon Shin displayed at Anyang Public Art Project, architect Chanjoong Kim’s ‘The Cubrick’ that was displayed at National Museum of Contemporary Art and various installations that were motivated by architect Youngchul Jang and Sookhee Chun are not limited to exhibition space and are filling the empty space of our daily life.
In Korea, architecture doesn’t carry the same definition of its English word, but rather considered as construction, building or real estate. When architects participate in art festival similar to ones that were mentioned above, architecture can be recognized as a ‘culture’ and through architectural design development, I anticipate local resident and citizen to cherish and be proud of architecture as they are with their culture.
