Successful Completion of Seosomun Historic Park, Being Looking Forward to Three Years Later

Assigning five pages in a newspaper is tremendous volume. I thank the director-general for supporting and approving to publish a discussion of <Seosomun Historic Park> including historic and religious multi-layered contents complicatedly in this magazine dealing with construction and architecture.

Even though until now a symposium was conducted annually whenever the magazine issued, discussing the topics deeply seemed like a first time. I have no idea whether the writer wrote contents and the title well. Actually many insufficient aspects exist. Nonetheless, I am grateful for just accomplishing and finishing almost impossible things with almost impossible schedule.

While this work was hardly afforded, the reasons why I pushed forward with this work was because of the mind and the thought written below when I was sending a proposal of contacts to panels on July 03. 2014.

Because Seosomun Park is a national land, and the Republic of Korea is not a Catholic country, there are many obstacles to pursue the crossroad of outside Seosomun, a martyrs’ shrine of Catholic, as a public project. In order to obtain the validity, much efforts have been made, and I think that many people would make efforts to keep in equipoise and not to lose justification in this aspect in the future.

However, we already know that Jerusalem is a mecca of faith, which transcends religion, and one of the best tourist attractions, and ‘Camino de Santiago’ in Spain has been tremendously loved several years ago. Except these, numerous churches and roads of pilgrimage have become undried tourism resources in a country where possessed the places. They have become cultural heritages exceeding religious as places of faith and reflection where the nature of humanity is oriented, and treasure houses of contemporary history and culture.

A holy land is a place with more than tolerance of a specific religious. People not related with the religious not only obtain and feel a large amount of things but also come back. This is why they have become best-seller tourism packages and history cultural inheritances. It is not appropriate that developing a holy land for making tourism resources and recovering historical places, as everyone knows.

Therefore, in order to get over an obsession of privatization of Seosomun Historic Park by a specific religious and become a best park, structure, holy land, and tourist site internationally, a symposium dealing with tourism, history, religious, construction, architecture, and landscape was proposed. As you know by looking at the discussion, the architects who felt joy at the winning of the design competition probably feel a huge responsibility on their shoulders, because they have to successfully put all things in a place balancedly and harmonically.

However, if the architects maintain the posture continuously until the target deadline, second half of 2017, based on what they said, “We hope an architect not to have a prominent attitude, and we tried our best not to cheat as much as possible” at the public announcement on June 2014, everyone would agree with the word, “Their promises were accomplished in the place”, when the completed building is revealed three years later, and then, that would be successful, I think.
