The Completion of DDP depends upon a careful operation

Response to opening of Dongdaemun Design Plaza are like that “What do I do at there? What is the purpose of the building?”

In order to construct a building with uncertain purposes, astronomical cost (500 billion won) was used. It is taxpayers’ money and just announced money. Experts predict the cost of the building would exceed 1 trillion won if land price and others are included.

Unveiled DDP in eight years after ‘Park Project of Dongdaemun Stadium’ planned by former Seoul Mayer Se-hoon Oh in 2006 and a number of repeated controversy. With respect to the completeness of construction, the comments of ‘better-than-expected’ are predominant.

However, a controversial issue about constructional necessity, which have been raised at the early stage of the project, seems interminable in terms of future functions and operations as a public building.

Many issues over DDP were never ceased in the last eight years. If issues are listed like ‘A to Z’, there would be no end to them. Therefore, when the aspects of post management and utilities are considered, the problems such as how the design foundation would entirely handle annual operating expenses (30 billion won) and a possibility of an atypical building beyond comparison to be operated for public spaces could arise continuously in the future.

More than 10 billion wons of public funding invested in the construction would come near to resulting in wasting the taxpayers’ precise money by these problems, and DDP has a possibility of becoming a hippo eating taxes or a city dinosaur that is gorgeous but useless before and after the birth.

The issues at the early stage of the project would be realistic, and they will lead to publication.

Although tried to stop it without number, the building was eventually built and cannot be demolished. Therefore, I wish the building not to lose its reputation of the largest atypical building in the world with its completion more than expected through rational operation.

Also, an application plan and an operational proposal for space of the building should be carefully prepared in order for the building to become public space.
