What kind of materials would architect use for his building?
From the past to the present, the most common building materials are stone, wood, brick, concrete and cement. Wood, on the other hand, is lighter than stone, is much easier to manufacture, and has beautiful patterns on it, which makes it a great material not only for building but also for furniture. Concrete is the most used building material, and many buildings with distinctive design are made with concrete.Does this mean, only the hard and heavy material can be used as building material?
Recently, there have been innovating materials that many architects prefer to use. Polycarbonate is one of them. Polycarbonate is a type of plastic with an impact strength that is 150 times higher than tempered glass and its excellent flexibility and machinability made polycarbonate a great substitute for acrylic, which can easily break and altered. When used for building construction, polycarbonate’s light weight can reduce the construction period and its cost is cheaper than other building materials. An architect Chan-joong Kim stated, “Polycarbonate has an excellent strength and waterproof ability, and it can dramatically reduce the time required to airlift the material and also the processing time”. Using these attributes of polycarbonate, Chan-joong Kim manufactured polycarbonate into various forms.
Manufactured polycarbonates are designed to harmonize with each space.
Type-A is a type with pillars arranged in existing tunnel and three-dimensional block is deployed around the pillar. Type-B is a type with the narrowest tunnel and three-dimensional block is lineally attached on the wall in order to eliminate the narrow spatial impression. Type-C aggressively utilized the lighting effect by lengthening the combination of three-dimensional block around ceiling. The last Type-D is the most general type that handles the wall surface, which can easily be tedious, dynamically using various block combinations.
Using polycarbonate, an interchange that used to be dark and gloomy now became bright and cheerful and is energizing citizens who are visiting Hangang.
Polycarbonate was not a popular material to be used in architecture; however, an architect discovered its material property and started utilizing it as a building material. There will be more diverse and innovative architectural materials in future. We look forward to see new architecture with newly researched and developed architectural material.
